Medicare

Medicare

When you first enroll in Medicare and during certain times of the year, you can choose how to receive your Medicare coverage. Two of the most common ways to get your coverage are the following:

Original Medicare

  • Choice of doctor and hospital

You can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare anywhere in the United States.

  • Costs

For services covered under Part B, you generally pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after you've paid your deductible. This is called your coinsurance. You can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare anywhere in the United States.

  • Monthly Premium

You will pay a monthly premium for Part B (For 2021, it is $ 148.50). If you choose to enroll in drug coverage (Part D), you will pay that premium separately.

  • Coverage

Original Medicare covers medically necessary services and supplies in hospitals, doctor's offices, and other health care settings. However, original Medicare doesn't cover certain benefits, like eye exams and most dental care and exams.

  • Part D

You can join a Medicare Advantage Plan. You do not need to enroll in a different plan to get drug coverage in these plans.

  • Travels

Original Medicare does not offer coverage outside of the United States. You need to purchase supplemental insurance that offers travel coverage.

Medicare Advantage

  • Choice of doctor and hospital

Generally, you will have to use the doctors and providers in the plan's network and service area. Most plans won't cover services you use outside of the plan's network and service area.

  • Costs

Out-of-pocket costs vary — Plans generally have lower out-of-pocket costs for most services.

  • Monthly Premium

In some territories, you will not have to pay a monthly premium. E.g., Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Most plans include drug coverage. Plans can have a $ 0 monthly premiumand could help you pay all or part of your premium for Part B.

  • Coverage

Plans generally offer additional services that Original Medicare doesn't, like vision, hearing, dental, routine exams, and more.

  • Part D

Part D prescription drug coverage is included in most plans. In these types of plans, you do not need to enroll in a separate drug plan (Part D).

  • Travels

In many counties and territories, some plans offer emergency coverage outside of the United States.
